Interior demolition clears out the inside of a house or a commercial space so the renovation can start. We take out non-structural walls, ceilings, finishes and fixtures, then carry the debris out. The job can be a full gut-out or selective demolition of a single room. MJ Masonry does this work for homeowners, property owners, developers and general contractors around Weymouth and Greater Boston.
Our demolition work centers on whole-building knockdowns, from house demolition to commercial building demolition. We take on interior demolition too, for renovations where the building itself stays up.
Tell us about the demolition or masonry work and where it is. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
A gut-out takes the inside back to the framing. Wall and ceiling surfaces come off down to the studs and joists, and non-structural walls come out. Finishes and fixtures go too, while the frame of the building stays in place.
Selective demolition takes out only what the new plan replaces. A kitchen remodel might lose its cabinets and one partition wall while the floors and windows stay. Before work starts, we go over the plan with you and mark what stays. Tell us about anything you plan to reuse, like a vanity or a stair rail.
In a commercial space, the same work is often called a strip-out. Drop ceilings and partition walls come out, while the base building stays. The space goes back to the shell so the next tenant's build-out can start.
Weymouth's housing runs older than the nation's. The Census Bureau's survey puts its median year built at 1964, the same as the state, against 1980 nationally. More than one in five Weymouth housing units went up before 1940, and about three in ten statewide.
National Park Service preservation guidance says plaster was the wall surface for nearly all buildings until the 1930s or 1940s. In a house from that era, a gut-out strips the old plaster and lath down to the studs.
EPA guidance lists vinyl floor tile and textured paint on walls and ceilings among the places asbestos turns up. MassDEP's rule, 310 CMR 7.15, calls for an asbestos survey before renovation or demolition when materials might contain it. An asbestos inspector licensed by the state checks every area the work will open, wall cavities included. If asbestos turns up, an asbestos abatement contractor removes it before we start.
Before work starts, the utilities in the work area get shut off. A licensed electrician makes the wiring safe, and a licensed plumber caps the water lines. Anything that has to stay on during the job gets marked.
Interior demolition makes dust, so we close off the work area with plastic. Vents in the work area get sealed so dust stays out of the ductwork. Floors and stairs that stay get covered before the first wall opens.
The debris goes out of the building as part of the job. The space is left clear for the next trade. Interior demolition is one part of what MJ Masonry does as a demolition and masonry contractor serving Weymouth.

A teardown waits on the permit and any asbestos removal. The utilities shut off their service before our machines arrive. On a commercial job, we work to the general contractor's schedule.
Our machines take the building down, and we load out the debris as we go. On masonry jobs, the walls go up to the plans, and we go over the finished work with you.
