What does a demolition and masonry contractor do?
A demolition contractor takes structures down and removes the debris. A masonry contractor builds walls and buildings from brick or concrete block, laid in mortar. MJ Masonry does both kinds of work, on houses and on commercial buildings.
Who do you work for?
Our customers include homeowners and property owners, plus developers and general contractors. General contractors send us a lot of commercial masonry bid work. Homeowners hire us on the demolition side, to take down a house or a garage.
What area do you serve?
We take jobs across the South Shore and Greater Boston. That takes in Quincy, Braintree, Brockton and Boston, plus Cambridge, Somerville, Newton and Lynn. Farther out, it reaches Framingham and Worcester. See the towns in our service area for the full list.
How does pricing work?
We price each job on its own, after we see it, and you get the quote in writing. On a teardown, size, access, the foundation and the debris load drive the price. On masonry work, wall area and materials come first, then access and the time of year. Call or text (617) 838-0280, and we will set a time to see your job.
Does a demolition in Weymouth need a permit?
Yes, a demolition in Weymouth needs a building permit from the town. A building at least 100 years old, or one of unknown age, can go to the Historical Commission for review. If the commission decides after a hearing that the building is preferably preserved, the permit waits six months. Each city and town has its own rules, and its building department can tell you what applies.
What happens if a building has asbestos?
It has to come out before the building does. State rules call for a survey and a written report from an asbestos inspector first. If the report finds asbestos, a separate abatement contractor removes it. Our demolition starts after that work is done.
Do you do interior demolition?
Yes. We gut houses and commercial spaces ahead of a renovation. Non-structural walls, ceilings, fixtures and old finishes come out, and the debris leaves with us.
Do you pour concrete too?
Yes. Our concrete work starts with the footings under our block and brick walls. We also pour foundation walls and slabs, plus pads, steps and landings. Stamped and decorative concrete go to another company.
Do you repair chimneys or repoint old brick?
No, those jobs go to a masonry repair specialist. Our masonry is new brick and block work. Paver patios and other landscape work go to a hardscape contractor.
